UGANDA'S population is estimated to hit 43.4 million in 2017 while the life expectancy is expected to increase from 43.3 years to 47.9. The population was 24 million in 2002 up from 12.8 million in 1980.
“The number of people is increasing each year,†said a report from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics. The report signed by the bureau’s executive director, John Male Mukasa, said the annual population growth rate was expected to increase from 3.3 per annum in 2007 to 3.5 per annum in 2011.
The report, which was based on analysis of historical demographic trends in the country with regard to fertility, mortality and international migration, predicted that the life expectancy would increase from 50.5 as predicted in 1991 to 54 for females and from 45.7 for males to 53 in 2017.
The high population growth rates had also had impact on the size of the school going population. It was estimated that the size of primary school going population (six-12 years) would increase from 6.3 million in 2007 to about 8.9 million in 2017.
Similarly, the size of secondary school-going population (13-19 years) would increase from 4.7 million to nearly 6.6 million in 2017.
But the report noted that the total number of deaths would increase from 459,000 in 2007 to 531,000 in 2017.
The infant mortality rate was predicted to decrease from an estimated 90 per 1,000 live births recorded in 2007 to about 82.7. The number of persons above 60 years is also expected to increase from 1.29 million in 2007 to 1.83 million by 2017.
The number of the working group will increase steadily from about 14 million in 2007 to 21 million in 2017, although the number of dependants was also increasing.
The bureau appealed to the public to use the statistics as a basis for policy debates, decision-making, investment and business transactions.
