Kabarole district has received sh36.5m from Kibale National Park under the revenue sharing project. According to the law, the Uganda Wildlife Authority which manages the parks has to share 20% of revenue generated from them parks with the neighbouring communities.

During the hand-over ceremony at Mucwa on Monday, the park’s chief warden, Charles Tumwesigye, said five sub-counties would benefit from the project.

Rwimi will get sh12m, Rutete sh8m, Kasenda sh8m, Busoro sh4m and Hakibale sh4m.

Tumwesigye said the money would finance the digging of trenches to stop elephants and baboons from destroying the local’s crops.

“The wildlife authority is concerned about the increased destruction of crops by the elephants and baboons,” Tumwesigye said.

He appealed to the district and sub-county officials to ensure that the funds are put to proper use.

The secretary for finance, Amina Kaija, hailed the authority for remembering the community.
