THE construction of a modern landing site at Majanji in Busia district has been commissioned by fisheries state minister, Fred Mukisa.

The sh1.8b project is aimed at ensuring high quality in handling fish from the source to the market. Under the five-year beach rehabilitation programme sponsored by the African Development Bank, the Government selected 10 landing sites to benefit from the project.

Apart from Mayuge and Kalangala, which will each have two new landing sites, Bugiri, Busia, Mukono, Kamuli, Nakasongola and Bulisa districts will each have one. Each facility will have a fish landing shade, a water supply system, a boat mending shade, a dry fish store, offices, toilets, a pier, an access road and a parking area.

Meeting fish traders at Busia main market last week, Mukisa said Kenyan fishmongers should not be barred from buying unprocessed fish from Uganda.

He was reacting to concerns raised by the fishermen who had suggested that only processed fish should be exported to Kenya.
