SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD B Johnny is the newest item on the Goodenuff Studios label. He is the youngest musical import at the Makindye-based music house.
But how did this Senior Three student of Katikamu SDA impress Pato and Aydee enough for them to take him on?

“Johnny writes his songs. All we do is co-edit and produce. His voice is way above average,” says Pato. The song on whose back Johnny rode to clinch the much sought-after Goodenuff deal is Lwaki Onumya? (Why Punish Me?). He wrote the song earlier this year, while at school.

I started composing songs in Senior One, but would keep them. However, when I wrote Lwaki Onumya, something kept telling me to record it. That is how I ended up at Goodenuff.”

The song is delivered in a highly addictive lovers’ rock style. It is poignant and plea-laden, like the singer is telling a personal story, a fact that overrides Johnny’s rather immature voice.

The vocals on the track are well-arranged, while the lyrics are beautiful. Since this is Johnny’s debut recording, he warrants the benefit of our doubt.
