UGANDA’S leading 400m runner Waisswa Lukungu was a shock loser in the third national track and field athletics trial held at Masindi on Saturday. He came a distant third in a time of 48.5 seconds in a race won by Policeman Samuel Egaddu in 47.3 seconds.

“I have not been training well. I do not have a coach. I might end up shifting to Kampala for some training,” said the Kakira Sugar Works runner.

Javelin favourites, KIU’s Annet Kabasindi and Ndejje's Patrick Kibwota won their respective events.

Justine Bayiga beat Emily Nanziri in the 100m race on the poor grass track, with a low time of 11.8 seconds. Mildred Gamba, who has been training in London, finished third. All of them run for KIU.

The championship in Masindi was also used by officials to celebrate the World Athletics Day sponsored by MTN.
The most promising showing at the trial was by teenage athlete Sylvia Chelangat from Kapchorwa.

After winning the 80m event, she was entered in the open category of the 3000m, first sharing the lead with her training partner Claire Kissa, before sprinting away to win in 9:58.4.
Action switches to Tororo this weekend for the fourth national trial.

Three more Ugandans have been taken on by Global Sports Communication, a company that manages some of the world’s top athletes including long distance ace Kenenisa Bekele.

Jimmy Adar, an 800m semifinalist at the Africa Senior Championships together with 3000m and 5000m colleagues Doreen Chesang and Abraham Kiplimo, have been signed by Global Sports and will soon start competing on the European circuit.

The company had earlier signed 3000m steeplechase runner Benjamin Kiplagat and 5000m athlete Stephen Kiprotich following their brilliant performance at the World Championships last year.
