THE story of the Miss Uganda Mid-western regional finals held on Saturday night was not that the national beauty pageant was finally held in Hoima, nor was it about the erratic sound system, the microphones that kept going off, or the local singer who could not sing to her own song.
The story in Hoima was about the 20-year-old twins Caroline Nyangoma and Joceline Nyakato. It was also a tribute of sorts to how much two weeks can mean in a beauty queen’s life.
Two weeks ago, in the Eastern Regional finals in Mbale, Caroline and Joceline were close to tears. The two pretty girls, apparently confident that their looks would get them through, but all wobbly and seemingly disinterested in the preliminaries, were not among the three chosen winners, and it devastated them. So much that they hardly spoke to the media at the post-event press conference.
But they really wanted to win, so they went to work. “We hit the gym everyday, and worked out constantly,†said eventual winner Nyangoma, the elder, but smaller, of the two.
“Mbale taught us a lesson, and we are not taking anything for granted anymore. We are still going to work hard till the finals.â€
So on Saturday, the two, slimmer and obviously more confident, swept the Hoima crowd off its feet. Nyangoma won and Nyakato (who faltered in the question and answer session) came third. Second place went to Diana Kahunde, 21, whose sunny personality shone through her somewhat hefty hips.
Nyangoma and Nyakato become the second set of twins to win in this year’s Miss Uganda regional finals. Jacqueline Nyakato won the Fort Portal finals, while her twin sister Joceline Nyangoma was second runner-up.
The pageant, sponsored by utl, Club and Air Uganda, moves to Jinja on May 31 for the last regional final.
