THE Tororo county MP and Forum for Democratic Change stalwart, Geoffrey Ekanya, last week stunned his party supporters when he referred to President Yoweri Museveni as “a gallant son of the soil”, reports Abraham Odeke.

“Our good President, our gallant son of the soil, is coming to visit us early next month (June). I want all of us to prepare to give him a historic and warm welcome. He is a President who supports private investment,” Ekanya told cheering constituents.

The MP was speaking in Mella sub-county after inspecting Kinyili village, where a land dispute by clans led to the torching of 31 grass-thatched houses and destruction of gardens.

Ekanya urged everybody in Tororo to support Museveni’s efforts to develop the country. “After all, it is the people of this area who groomed Museveni by allowing him to use Koitangiro hills to establish the first recruitment camp for fighters in the 1970s.”

Ekanya has been a vocal critic of Museveni. Analysts believe his change of political tone is because the President recently granted his county a district status.
