ONE key lesson Uganda learnt from the last Nations Cup qualifiers is never to take any chances.

Cranes missed out on a place by a single goal, and will this time want to determine their own fate, and not depend on others. Uganda depended on South Africa to earn them a place in Ghana 2008, only for Zambia to turn tables on a hapless Bafana Bafana side.

Government, FUFA and corporate sponsors MTN are in a concerted effort therefore working tirelessly to ensure that the Cranes are at their full potential in all encounters.

The strategy involves having a playing squad of 25 players travel for each of the three away games.

A plan to have a full technical team and if possible even fans for all away matches is also being looked into, according to federation publicist Rogers Mulindwa .

The Cranes depart on Thursday for Benin with Csaba backed by not only his assistants David Otti and Sam Timbe, but a goalkeeper trainer Fred “Giringi” Lukwago.

Previously, head coach Csaba was short of technical assistance as he travelled alone or with a single assistant.

“We want to this time make use of every opportunity,” explained Mulindwa, adding that more ideas that can prop Uganda to historic World Cup or Nations Cup slots are being sought from fans.

An advance team will also ensure that Cranes get comfortable hotels.

Ugandan teams have always complained of mistreatment when abroad. The latest case involved Uganda’s match with Niger in Niamey, where the Cranes complained of a poor hotel, bad feeding, lack of proper training facilities and biased officiation.

Teams with enough resources also use advance teams for soccer espionage.

World soccer governing body FIFA, in a new resolution, asked visiting teams to foot their bill on away engagements to cut out on mistreatment.

The education and sports ministry has on its part offered sh112.9m for the team’s first three matches.

Assistant commissioner for sports Omara Apita said the funding started with payment of air-tickets to bring Cranes' foreign based professionals.

The Cranes will after hosting Angola depart for Luanda on June 18.
