MAKERERE University has withheld the academic transcripts of eight former students of the Faculty of Agriculture over a sh1.5m debt. The students, who graduated last year and were sponsored by the Government, are accused of being involved in financial malpractices.
The Dean of Students, John Ekudu-Adoku, said the students illegally received allowances for living out side the campus yet they were living in the university halls of residence.
Each government-sponsored student, who is not housed at the campus, is given sh360,000 per semester to cater for feeding and accommodation expenses.
In a May 7 circular to academic registrar Amos Olar-Odur, Ekudu said: “At the last disciplinary committee, it was decided that you withhold the degree certificates and transcripts for the students who owe the university money.â€
Christine Lowila, who used to live in Mary Stuart Hall, owes the university sh340,000, while Hellen Opio has to refund sh210,000 for “fraudulently†staying in the CCE Complex Hall.
Esau Asedri of Lumumba Hall has to refund sh340,000, Deos Paul Kato of Nkurumah Hall sh160,000, while David Labu is required to pay sh70,000 for also living in Nkurumah.
Joseph Ebinu of Nkurumah owes the university sh70,000, his colleague Victor Ojede sh340,000, while Godfrey Sengendo of Lumumba Hall was ordered to refund sh60,000.
“We cannot release their transcripts until they refund the money,†Ekudu said.
