The publication of the recent story about the man who claims to be
the neglected son of Mwanga II was so obviously untrue. “Prince†Kalemera was said to be 106, meaning that he was born in 1902. It is well known that Mwanga II was
exiled to the Seychelles in 1899
and died in 1903 without ever returning to Buganda. I wonder how Mwanga II managed to sire a child in Buganda when he was overseas.
Kalemera stated that he went
to King’s College Budo from
1934-1936. If this were true, it is
strange that Kalemera’s records
of being the oldest “boy†to join
S1 in Budo at 32, and also being
the oldest surviving OB were
not noted and celebrated by The
New Vision. It is remarkable
that Kalemera, a prince who “missed becoming Kabaka by a whisker,†was baptised at 15 but
even more remarkable that Mwanga II, who died in 1903, could have sent him on a trip to erusalem in 1917.
Kalemera’s Jerusalem story also has other conflicts with documented history. Jerusalem
was under Turkish control until
December 1917, when it was
captured by the British in the
First World War. If Kalemera went there in 1917, his dead father must have been collaborating with the Turks or, if he went after the city fell to the British, he must have been able to walk to Mombasa and get a steam-powered ship up to
Jerusalem between December
11- 31, 1917.
Kalemera’s reference to Israel instead of Palestine also tends
to suggest that he was lying because the state of Israel was
only established in 1948.
Lastly, it is a well-documented fact that Chwa II was born on August 8, 1896, and ascended to the throne on August 14, 1897.
How could Kalemera have missed out on being the Kabaka “by a whisker†if, by his own account, he was born five years after Chwa II ascended to the throne? It is also odd that Kalemera thought that Chwa II was aged six when he ascended to the throne.
Therefore, unless Kalemera omitted to state that he also has
the secret to time travel, it is fairly obvious that The New Vision bought into and fed its readers a pack of lies.
Common sense, a calculator and Wikipedia would have saved the paper this embarrassment.
