THE prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, Justice Hassan Jallow, has confirmed that some soldiers of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) are accused of committing atrocities during the 1994 genocide.
Vision Reporter and agencies write that investigations against RPF soldiers have been on for more than 10 years, according to Hirondelle News Agency that specialises in reporting proceeding of the tribunal in Arusha, Tanzania.
Justice Jallow’s predecessor, Swiss national Carla Del Ponte, was the first to disclose about the RPF investigations during her tenure as the tribunal’s prosecutor from 1999 to 2003.
“It has been established that on June 5, 1994, RPF soldiers killed 13 clergymen and two other civilians at Gitarana (central Rwanda),†Jallow last week told the UN Security Council, while tabling his six-monthly report of the court’s exit strategy. RPF, led by President Paul Kagame, currently holds power. The force is credited with stopping the genocide.
Jallo, a Gambian national, stated that the Rwandan Prosecutor General, Martin Ngoga, had told him he would shortly indict the implicated soldiers.
