AIR Uganda has started flights to Zanzibar, becoming the first airline to offer a direct flight from Entebbe to Zanzibar. Previously, passengers from Entebbe had to stop over in Dar es Salaam and change planes before continuing to Zanzibar.
The chief executive, Peter De Waal, said: “In addition to our routes of Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Juba and Dar es Salaam, we are flying to Zanzibar on Fridays and Sundays.â€
The commercial director, Vittorio Scabbia, told travel agents from Kampala who flew on the inaugural flight that there was a growing business and holiday market in Zanzibar.
“They (travels agents) have seen a dramatic increase in passenger traffic to Zanzibar, but the problem was about is getting there. Air Uganda saw the niche in the market and with the new direct flight, the market will open up more. It will be a profitable route. We aim at becoming one of of the top regional carriers. Everything is going according to plan,†Scabbia said.
