Many of your readers and our viewers and listeners wanted to know why UBC did not air particular games despite the fact that we broadcast the opening ceremony and the first game between Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
This was because UBC got partial rights for this tournament. As a consequence, we shall air selected matches in the preliminary rounds, in the quarters, the semi-finals and the grand finale.
The rights providers for most of the national and public broadcasters in Africa only managed to get the rights for some of the games. As sports and soccer in particular become more lucrative, there is an increased fight for the rights.
On June 8, UBC aired the much anticipated match between the Uganda Cranes and Benin in Cotonou, Benin.
In the 65th minute we unfortunately lost our signal in Kampala due to a power outage at our Kololo transmitter and our viewers were unable to see the remainder of the match.
The irregularity was remedied and our signal returned 50 minutes later after the game. UBC TV re-aired the match at 10:30pm that evening and the following morning. We regret any inconveniences caused.
