A SOLDIER has been arrested over the death of a man he allegedly shot on Sunday in Kalerwe, a Kampala suburb.
Sergeant Godfrey Kateregga, who is attached to the crime intelligence unit of the Criminal Investigations Department, survived being beaten by an irate mob after he reportedly shot James Kawooya, whom he mistook to be a mobile phone thief.
Deputy Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said Kawooya paid with his life as he tried to recover his mobile phone that had been snatched from him by a thug.
“Kawooya jumped off a motorcycle and chased the thief. The robber hurled the phone backwards and it landed a few inches from Kateregga’s vehicle.
“When Kawooya bent to pick it, Kateregga thought he was the thief and he shot him.â€
Frightened by the surging people, Kateregga reportedly fired bullets in the air and retreated to the fuel station, which the mob vandalised as it bayed for his blood.
The station chief, Hope Bikaaku, said the mob broke flasks, wall clocks, a refrigerator and glasses.
“When the security personnel refused to surrender the suspect to the mob, it started hurling stones at the supermarket but the Police came and took him away,†she said.
The mob turned its fury to Kateregga’s vehicle, a white Toyota, and torched it. Kateregga will be charged with murder in the court martial, the Police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, said.
