IN anticipation of another downpour that would culminate into disaster, Amuria District has made plans to handle any disasters.

“We have been warned by weather experts that the rains that hit in August 2007 would return. This time we are prepared,” said Cryzestom Kayise, the chairman of the disaster preparedness committee. He was at a briefing with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) officials who were distributing relief items.

The committee which meets weekly was grateful to the NGOs that helped those affected by last year’s floods.

The FAO country representative, Percy Misika, said the organisation had supported 15,000 households with assorted planting materials and farm tools.

At the function, the state minister for disaster preparedness, Musa Ecweru, said had it not been for the floods, Teso would be having enough food.

He added that when famine hits Teso, it will result in suffering in Lango, Karamoja and parts of Busoga.

Ecweru lashed out at politicians who attacked him for concentrating in Teso region ever since the floods.

“I didn’t invite problems to this area, but ever since I was posted to the ministry, I have always asked what my mandate was. But after the floods, I realised I was supposed to avoid preventable disasters and manage unpreventable ones and prepare people to get out of the disasters,” said Ecweru.
