Tolerant Museveni
PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni is a very liberal man. During the opening of the Organisation of Islamic Conference ministerial meeting at Speke Resort Munyonyo attended mostly by Muslims, Museveni was comfortable talking about pork which is taboo to Muslims. He said Uganda is a multi-religious society which believes in live and let live. “When your neighbour cooks his pork as long as he doesn’t put it into your mouth, let him live,” he advised. Hmmn, that is a good idea.

Difficult name

Prof. Oweyaga Afuna Aduula cannot be happy with his parents for giving him such a difficult name. Attending the Nile Basin conference on environment at Hotel Africana on Tuesday, it took him time to explain to the participants who came from all Nile basin countries what his name means. To make sure they understood his name properly, he had to translate it into English. “My name means he who gets must boast.” This threw the participants into prolonged laughter.

Proficient Gordon

British High Commissioner Francois Gordon is very fluent in luganda. He has learnt a number of Kiganda proverbs during his stay in the country. Delivering a speech at his residence during the celebration to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday, Gordon used a number of proverbs to explain that he was soon leaving Uganda after completing his service. ‘Sadly, as is said so well in Luganda, N’azina obulungi ava mudiro, olugenda enjala teruda’ this is my last Queen’s party in Uganda.” The Luganda proverb means that even the best dancer finally leaves the stage.

God is angry
Gender minister Syda Bbumba believes that people who think that they are pleasing God by giving tokens to street children, are in for a shock, because they are unknowingly doing the opposite of what God wants! During the launch of tools to prevent child labour of orphans caused by HIV/AIDS at Serena Hotel, Bbumba said: “God says love thy neighbour as you love thyself,” which means that you don’t lure those children to stay on streets by giving them those tokens. So God must be annoyed with you!” So, madam Minister, what is the alternative to this approach?
