FOR many years, certain brands of video games dominated the market until Sony invented the play station and play station2. Play stations have since re-defined the video game experience with their variety of game options and the joystick pads for easier manoeuvring.
However, although they are a brilliant addition to the games industry, they demand that one uses a TV monitor to play them.
The latest Sony product — the Play Station Portable (PSP) has gone the extra-mile by encompassing all the games into a portable device that does not need a television monitor.
PSP is a hand-held device with a 4.3 Inch screen display that enables the user to play 3D games, full-length movies, music and view photos.
The PSP uses Sony’s recently created “cross media bar†interface. You use the directional keypad to horizontally navigate through Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Game, and Internet icons, and each section has other icons attached to it on a vertical axis.
The Sony PSP runs on a processor and comes with 32MB in-built memory. The PSP system has a boatload of talents, including: over 350 games, it plays MP3 and MP4 formats, creates a slide show for your photos, can hold 460 feature films and TV programmes.
In addition, PSP features Wireless (WLAN) capabilities for multiplayer game play as well as an in-built browser for accessing content downloads,†Sultan explained.
Games and officially licensed movies come on Sony’s universal media disc (UMD), which are housed in protective cartridges.
The UMD drive is grafted to the back of the unit; you load it and snap it shut just as you would a camcorder. The top edge also sports infrared and a USB 2.0 port that you can use to link the device to your PC.
For the lovers of computer games, the Sony PSP makes playing the game easier because it is portable. It has got popular games like God of War: Chains of Olympus, Pursuit Force and Extreme Justice amongst others. The variety of games should keep you busy, and the variety of ways to play will certainly have you glued.
The good news is the PSP plays many types of audio files. You simply drag your audio files into the music folder on your memory stick duo-card and they will show up on the PSP.
Getting UMD onto a Play Station Portable is much easier than it used to be. The Sony Media Manager software lets you transfer photos, music, and videos from a PC to your PSP with relative ease.
It also lets you back up your saved games and manipulates pod cast feeds. You can buy a play station at Gadgets Mania at Garden City Basement at sh700,000 per unit.
