PAKISTANIS living in Uganda have asked their government to re-open its embassy in Uganda, saying this would improve their business operations further.

The Pakistanis asked their foreign minister, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, to lobby their president (Pervez Musharraf) to reinstate the embassy, which will also help them in visa renewals.

Currently, Pakistani has an honourary consul in Uganda (Boney Katatumba) and the nearest Pakistani embassy is in Kenya. Pakistan closed its High Commission in Uganda in 1996 under the reign of President Farook Legari.

About 300 Pakistanis living in Uganda expressed their views through their community chairman, Shah Rais Khan, while meeting Qureshi at Kati Kati Restaurant in Kampala on Thursday.

Qureshi flew to Uganda to attend the 35th Organisation of Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers in Munyonyo early this week. He commended the Ugandan Government for according his countrymen a good investment environment.

“My people are happy here. I have invited Uganda’s foreign affairs minister together with Ugandan investors to Pakistani in October this year so as to explore investment opportunities there,” Qureshi said.
