ST. Lawrence’s Ivan Wesonga got a unique sprint double as calls for an electronic timer were again sounded at the third edition of the MTN sponsored Kyabazinga track and field championships in Bugembe.

Wesonga beat national runner Stephen Odwar in the 100m event, winning in 10.8 seconds before he burst to take the 200m dash in 22.3 seconds. Teammate Christopher Nwang (22.8) finished third.

But there was drama at the 100m women sprint, when officials failed to agree on who of NUSFU’s Emily Nanziri and Makerere’s Mildred Gamba had won the race. They both clocked 11.8 seconds. Gamba was later declared the winner.

NUSFU’s Monica Akello also got a double in the 400m and 800m events but it was Adero Nyakisi who took the toast of the day.

The Prisons’ runner, after winning the 1500m with ease, took on a tough field that had Jane Suuto and Faridah Chelangat in the 5000m.

By the fifth of the 12 and half laps, Nyakisi had already broken away from the pack and looked even stronger with every lap, clocking below 17 minutes on a grass track.
