UGANDA Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (UETCL) has invited firms to carry out a feasibility study for the construction of the Karuma transmission line and a sub-station.

The firm is also finalising the signing of a transmission contract for the Bujagali-Kawanda transmission line and Kawanda sub-station.

The utility firm proposes to construct a transmission interconnection line to evacuate power for the proposed Karuma hydro-power plant to major local centres in central, eastern and West Nile regions.

The components include Karuma-Kawanda, Karuma-Lira, and Karuma Olwiyo, Olwiyo-Packwach, Olwiyo-Adjumani and a new 132/133kV sub-station extension to Lira.

“The Government received financing from the Government of Norway and intends to apply part of the proceeds towards the cost of consultancy services,” read the notice.

“The services include the feasibility study, environmental impact assessment and resettlement action plan for the Karuma interconnection project.”

UETCL said the duration of the assignment was expected to last eight months. Negotiations for the construction of the proposed 200 mega watts Karuma hydro-power project are underway.

The Government and a Norwegian power firm, Norpak, are drafting a memorandum of understanding that would speed up the process.
The work on the sh787.5b project is expected to start this year. The construction work will last three years.
