Dr. Sulaiman Kiggundu, the fallen national chairman of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, dedicated his life to fighting injustice, leaders of the Democratic Party (DP) have said.

During a rally at Nateete in Kampala on Sunday, the leaders described Kiggundu as a national hero.

The closure of his Greenland Bank and detention in Luzira Prison, they said, could have caused his death.

Kiggundu, who served as Bank of Uganda governor from 1986 to 1990, founded Greenland Bank, which attempted to secretly buy the Uganda Commercial Bank.

The bank was closed over financial irregularities, leading to Kiggundu’s arrest and prosecution.

He was committed to civil prison in Luzira for six months.

Medical reports indicate that Kiggundu, who passed away at Donald Gordon Hospital in South Africa on Friday, had been hospitalised with cancer and high blood pressure.

DP’s legal adviser Erias Lukwago said Kiggundu fought injustice and had left a legacy for freedom fighters to emulate.

“We feel a lot of pain that Kiggundu has not lived to witness the fall of President Yoweri Museveni,” Lukwago said, as he knelt down to pray.

MP Mathias Nsubuga said he lived with Kiggundu in Nairobi before he joined the NRM Government in 1986.

“It was Kiggundu who introduced Museveni to Prof. Yusuf Lule, who later became the chairman of the NRM political wing that finally overthrew the Obote II regime,” he said.

Nsubuga asked the Government to recognise Dr. Kiggundu as a national hero and let his body lie in state at Parliament.
