Old Fox was the most gallant Lion!

EDITOR—Dr. Tumusiime Rushedge was the most gallant Lion! While Ntare School has produced presidents, and all manner of professionals, ‘Tom Rush’ is the old boy that has always most strongly given me the feeling, “you went to the same school, and therefore have no excuse for mediocrity.”

It is fitting that, 12 years ago, he was honoured with the school’s highest award, Order of the Lion. The school badge that he designed in his student days was one of the early testimonies to his multi-faceted genius.

And while the epithet genius is often inappropriately assigned, there can be doubt that Rushedge deserved every bit of it. President Museveni’s assessment that he was a comet that appears once in 100 years was either spot-on, or an understatement.

I was uncomfortable with some of the the content of the Old Fox’s column but the language, humour and wit with which he narrated his escapades always made me look forward to the next article.

I once publicly (in a letter to Sunday Vision) expressed the wish that he gets born- again, and it is great to learn that he met Jesus, however belatedly. As a writer, Tom Rush was Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde combined, and cast into our times and country.

I will dearly miss this most gallant of lions.
