PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has urged soldiers in the East African region to take sports seriously to avoid unnecessary health problems.

The president was speaking at the closing ceremony of the week-long East Africa Defence Forces Culture and Sports competitions at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Wednesday.

General Museveni promised to continue promoting sports in the army as means to fight disease among soldiers.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces also used the ceremony to emphasise the importance of sports as a way the soldiers to avoid contracting the HIV/AIDS scourge.

“I always make sure I keep myself fit,” Museveni said.

Uganda won the overall trophy ahead of Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.
