THE Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is to destroy more than 300 fake weighing scales impounded from traders in northern Uganda.

Emmanuel Ageta, the UNBS regional manager, who carried out the inspection campaign for goods and weighing scales, urged the district councils to enact laws to punish those who sell expired products and falsify the weighing scales.

He explained that the scales would be auctioned to scrap dealers.

Ageta disclosed that 100 scales were recovered in Gulu alone, seven in Pader, 50 in Kitgum, 80 in Lira and 50 in West Nile.

“We shall dispose all these as scrap,” he said.

He said most of the scales used in several places in the north were meant for domestic use and not for trade.

“But because of poverty, many traders have embraced them to earn a living. “We are trying to sensitise the traders and consumers to stop using the fake scales,” Ageta noted.

Ageta cited Kisenyi in Kampala as one of the sources for fake scales being used in the region.

“We are ready to fight this vice until we get rid of these fake scales in the markets.

“Some of the manufacturers of these scales go ahead to write Nairobi on their scales to falsify the trademark.
“They know that if they write Uganda on their scales, no one will buy them,” he explained.

Ageta said the two-decade insurgency in the north had made the region a hotspot for fraudsters.

“It requires all the radio stations in the region to start sensitising the people about fake scales and products without UNBS approval or sticker,” Ageta added.
He said the scales were made of weak materials meant for making saucepans.
