SHE gave me a strained look and then said, “Nooooo way! You are not buying or wearing a pink shirt.†I spent more than 20 minutes and days after that convincing my lady friend that it’s really cool for me to wear a pink shirt. That pink is no longer a preserve for little cute baby girls and ladies.
It was a heated debate in which I got a tad philosophical and told her that real men wear pink to show that it is okay for men to cry and get emotional, to eat ice cream, wear make up (read lip gloss and powder) in moderate quantities, plait hair and wear jewelry like local and international celebrities.
The sensitivity stuff aside, a man wearing pink shows above all, that he is a confident and brave man not afraid to stick his neck out and rally single handedly against a fashion norm.
He looks in the mirror, loves what he sees and without being terrified that women and chauvinistic men will pick on him for wearing what has largely been accepted as a feminine colour, walks out all pinked.
But for men to wear pink should not be considered some sort of rebellious act against tradition. Pink is genuinely cool on men. It is alluring and has a calming effect.
Ugandan fashion guru Santa Anzo is impressed that men in Uganda are also now wearing pink. “The guys in the western world are quite colourful as far as the wardrobe is concerned,†she observes.
“Guys should get a bit of colour and other bright colours like lime green are a good option.â€
But how does one make pink cut it out for them? Should it be pink for all men? And just how much pink should a man drape himself in?
Santa advises that care be taken when choosing the shade of pink; baby pink is advisable as opposed to shouting pink.
She also says men can wear pink ties with pink shirts as long as they blend with other items like the trousers and coats. Grey would make a good blend.
Pink can also be well coordinated with tans, black, navys and other blues tones. While Santa is in favour of men wearing pink shirts and ties, she is a little disturbed by a man in a pink suit.
