The National Social Security Fund and the Uganda Red Cross are repainting zebra crossings in an effort to improve road safety in Kampala.
Last week, they repainted four zebra crossings at the Main Post Office on Kampala Road, Makerere University main gate, Kitante Primary School and on Ben Kiwanuka Street near the Old Taxi Park.
NSSF managing director David Chandi said the exercise was part of the institution’s corporate social responsibility, adding that they would also mark black spots on highways soon.
He said the Police reported that in Kampala, 9,144 accidents were reported in 2006, with 310 deaths.
The most affected were pedestrians.
“It is, therefore, important that we do our part in reducing this carnage on roads,†Chandi said.
