MBALE’S Joel Wambisha kept his nerve and tempo to claim the U-14 boy's title at the Rwenzori Inter Schools Tennis Championships at Lugogo Tennis Centre yesterday.
Wambisha, 13, a senior two student at Wanale View Secondary School in Mbale started off nervously and lost the first set to Simon Ayella, son of tennis legend John Oduke. But a controversial line call by the umpire unsettled Ayella and gave Wambisha the impetus to fight on.
Wambisha, used big winners and a big serve to unsettle his opponent to claim the next two sets 7-5 10-5.
“In the first set my morale was very low and I made several mistakes, but I realised that I could change things and that is what I did to take the title,†Wambisha said.
“The cheers in the stands motivated me and I thought it was the only way I could redeem myself after losing the U-16 title to David Oringa,†he added.
Lydia Ndagire was a double winner by claiming the U-14 and U-16 girls' crown. Kololo Secondary School claimed the boys crown while Nabisunsa Girls' School wrapped up the girls title.
