RESIDENTS of Bwaise and Kalerwe will no longer have to worry of floods after the rehabilitation of the Lubigi channel.
Lubigi, also known as Nsooba channel, is to be worked on under the Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project.
Implementation of the World Bank-funded project was expected to kick off next month, according the co-ordinator Tamale Kiggundu.
“The bank agreed to give us a $100m (sh160b) loan, which can be accessed after Parliament’s approval,†he told The New Vision on Friday at City Hall.
He said the project would be executed in three phases in 10 years.
The infrastructure development project encompasses the implementation of the Kampala drainage master plan, traffic and road maintenance, improvement of physical structures, electrical systems and revenue collection.
The Lubigi channel works is among those to be undertaken in the first phase, which will take three years.
This phase, estimated to cost $33.6m, (sh54b) is awaiting parliamentary approval this month.
Kiggundu said the channel, measuring about 5km, would be rehabilitated in the model of Nakivubo channel. It would be made wider and deeper to make it carry more run-off water.
He added that the work would start from Kalerwe, at the Northern Bypass crossing, and move up to Lubigi swamp in Wakiso district.
“As work on Lubigi begins, we would be designing Nalukolongo channel, where work is expected to kick off in the second phase.â€
Other projects under the first phase are the construction of three modern markets, each in Kawempe, Makindye and Rubaga divisions and upgrading Kiteezi landing site.
Kiggundu said Mpererwe-Kawempe-Tula and Bukoto-Kisaasi-Kikaaya roads would also be tarmacked.
“Seven city junctions including the CPS junction on Kampala road and that at Pride Theatre on Namirembe Road will get traffic lights. We shall also review the one-way traffic flow system,†he added.
