Maj. Gen. James Kazini’s wife has blocked his planned wedding with another woman, which was slated for July 19.

Mary Eupheniya Katushabe on Friday lodged a caveat in the office of the Kasese Chief Administrative Officer, where Kazini and Phoebe Birungi were to contract their marriage.

Through her lawyers, Lumonya, Bushara and Advocates, Katushabe stated that she was the legally wed wife to Kazini.

Katushabe’s claim is supported by a letter from St. James Cathedral, Ruharo in Mbarara, which indicates that Kazini and Katushabe were wed there in 1990.

“Re: certificate of marriage between Lt. Col. James Kazini and Mary Eupheniya Katushabe. In regard to the above named persons at St. James Cathedral, Ruharo in Mbarara, we are writing to confirm that their marriage was solemnised at St. James Cathedral, Ruharo in Mbarara.

“The marriage certificate no. 2689 was issued to them on 8th, September, 1990,” the Church stated in the letter dated July 4, 2008 and signed by the Dean, the Very Rev. Canon G. Kamondo.

According to the lawyers, neither Kazini nor Katushabe, who is said to be a businesswoman, have ever sought to divorce.

The lawyers said the church wedding and the marriage at the CAO’s office are both civil marriages, which are monogamous in nature.

They explained that any marriage conducted after that is null and void unless the parties in the contract are divorced or one of them is dead.

The former army commander announced last month that he would marry Phoebe Birungi this month in Kasese.

“I hereby give notice that marriage is intended to be had within two weeks between me and the other party,” said a notice of June 23, at the Kasese district headquarters.

The document was signed before the acting chief administrative officer, Willy Bataringaya, who is also the district registrar of marriages.

Kazini, 51, stated in the notice that he was single and a resident of Base Camp village in Kasese Town Council. Birungi, 39, was described as an accountant from Sanga sub-county in Kiruhura district. The two, co-signed the marriage notice.

The former army commander is on bail pending hearing of his appeal against conviction and sentence to four years in prison passed by the General Court Martial over loss of sh60m belonging to the UPDF.

Following an assault was reported by a Mulago doctor against Kazini earlier this year, the army officer told the New Vision that he officially had two wives.

“I have two wives, one at my home in Munyonyo in Kampala and Winnie, with whom I have a daughter,” Kazini said.
