The most memorable weddings in Uganda

For many people, their wedding is the most memorable function of their life. They cannot forget any bit of it. But there are weddings whose memories live on, not only with the couples, but also with the thousands who witnessed or heard of them.

For many people, their wedding is the most memorable function of their life. They cannot forget any bit of it. But there are weddings whose memories live on, not only with the couples, but also with the thousands who witnessed or heard of them.

Moses Byaruhanga and Peace Rubarenza
The Presidential assistant’s wedding reception at Speke Resort Munyonyo in February 2003, had a lot of glamour. The most exotic of drinks and eats were served. The cake was several feet high and the guest-list seemed a who-is-who roll call. The couple crowned it all by riding in a chariot drawn by horses.

prof. Apolo Nsibambi and Esther Kabuza
Again the splendour of power and money stripped naked as the country’s Prime Minister married Esther at All Saints’ Cathedral in March 2003. Yet again the big and mighty got together to celebrate with one of their own, as the nation looked on in awe. It says a lot that the National Anthem was played at the function attended by the President. Businessman Gordon Wavamunno was chairman of the organising committee.

Jose Chameleone and Daniella Atim, June 2008
Currently all the talk is about this one as it took place a few weeks ago. Chameleone attracted crowds of awed on-lookers as he arrived for the church service at St. James’ Cathedral Bbina in a helicopter. The bride arrived later in a motorcade of seven limousines. The father of the bride united the couple, both clad in spotless white. The newly-weds flew in the chopper to the reception at Serena Hotel, where crowds waited to have a glimpse of them.

Francis Kabagambe, Ngonzebwa AND Ateenyi, july 15, 2006
This one set a regional record in modern-day Bunyoro as for the first time two women, sisters at that, got married to a single man in a single ceremony. The traditional wedding held at the home of the brides’ parents in Hoima had one of the region’s tycoons, Francis Kabagambe marry two sisters; Stella Ateenyi and her younger sister Rosemary Ngonzebwa, to take his tally of wives to four. He paid the same bride price for the two girls.

Mass wedding
Twelve couples were wed at Namirembe Cathedral on November 5, 2005.
