DOREEN Chesang is no where near the favourites’ tag in today’s women 3000m finals at the World Junior Championships, but her coach Jurrie Van der Velden has not ruled out a surprise performance from the 19-year old.

At the seven-day event that is taking place in the Polish city of Bydgoszs, Chesang will be the only Ugandan in action today, and will try to improve on her 11-place finish at the World Youth Championships last year.

“There are two strong Kenyans and Ethiopians in there but if she runs her own race, she can do something good. She has improved ever since she came here (in the Netherlands) for training,” said Velden of the athlete who has spent a month in the Netherlands training under her managers, Global Sports Communication.

Velden, who saw Stephen Kiprotich and James Kibet fail in their attempt for medals, will hope that Chesang opens the medal gates ahead of tomorrow’s action.

Favourite Benjamin Kiplagat, who had an easy semi-final, will fight for a podium finish in the 3000m steeplechase final.

Abraham Kiplimo and Moses Kipsiro will also be competing in the 5000m event final tomorrow.
