THE beds in labour wards are not suitable for easy delivery, according to former Vice-President Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe.

Kazibwe, who is the national chairperson of Savings and Credit Cooperatives, said chair-like beds would enable expectant mothers deliver effortlessly.

“Gravitational pull is vital in helping the baby move down the birth canal and once an expectant mother is placed in such a convenient position, the work of the midwife is simplified,” Kazibwe, a professional medical doctor, explained on Friday.

According to the Uganda Demographic Survey 2006, maternal mortality rate stands at 435 per 100,000 births.

This is a significant reduction from 505 per every 100,000 births in 2001.

Kazibwe made the remarks while touring the health unit of The Hunger Project’s Iganga Epicentre during the launch of Iganga Food Farmers’ Initiative SACCO in Nakalama sub-county.

She advised local leaders against making social functions like burials a priority over urgent official matters.

“I get surprised whenever I hear of a politician who abandons office and attends a funeral. I never did that but the people of Kigulu used to give me votes whenever I contested for the parliamentary seat.” Woman MP Beatrice Magoola warned residents against keeping money in pots but utilise the SACCO’s banking services.

“Money can easily be stolen or misappropriated from your homes yet if it is kept in a bank, its safety is guaranteed,” she said.

Iganga resident district commissioner Lubega Wagwa said a Police post would be set up in Nakalama.
