NINE people died on the spot in two separate accidents yesterday.
Three men perished when their FUSO truck rammed into a trailer that was parked at Matanga on the Masaka-Kampala highway.

The southern regional Police commander, Andrew Sorowen, identified one of the deceased as Charles Ssekeba, a resident of Kawempe Division in Kampala.

He was the driver of the FUSO truck that was heading to Masaka from Kampala. Two others could not be identified and their bodies were taken to Masaka Hospital mortuary.

Sorowen, who attributed the accident to speeding, said Emmanuel Agaba, who was in Ssekeba’s vehicle, survived with minor injuries.

“The driver of the FUSO truck might have fallen asleep because the people who were in the parked trailer, which was from Rwanda, made several attempts to flash lights to him as he was driving towards them in vain. They were parked on the opposite side of the road,” he said. He added that Ssekeba was heading to Masaka to buy matooke.

Another accident, which occurred on the Mubende-Kagadi road, killed six people when their lorry overturned.

Kibaale traffic chief, Amongin Okwir identified some of the dead as Paul Osishabwe, Muyambiri, Fred and Wilson, who were seated on top of the vehicle. The other two could not be identified by press time as their bodies were still trapped in the wreckage.
The Fuso truck was ferrying fertilisers to Kamuseegu Tea Estate in Kibaale district.

Witnesses said the driver sped down Kasungwa Hill, failed to go round a corner and the car overturned.
