The Kakira Outgrowers Rural Development Fund has built science laboratories for Busedde College and Buyengo Secondary School, both in Jinja district.

The fund was formed by Kakira Sugar Works and the Busoga Sugarcane Growers Association to help the communities that live within a radius of 30 kilometres from the factory.

The factory contributes sh125 per tonne of sugarcane supplied to the fund, while the association contributes sh250.

From the fund, a five classroom block has also been constructed at Baitambogwe Secondary School in Mayuge district.

The higher education state minister, Gabriel Opio, commissioned the projects worth sh600m on Friday at Busedde College.

Flanked by his energy counterpart, Daudi Migereko, Opio said the Government had got resources from the African Development Bank to rehabilitate ‘traditional’ secondary schools.

He revealed that a loan from the World Bank would be used to improve infrastructure in Universal Secondary Education (USE) schools.

“We shall have the funds released by November. We shall then embark on provision and improvement of infrastructure in all USE schools, including construction and equipping science laboratories.”

Opio revealed that the ministry would recruit more teachers for USE schools.

John Rubaramira, the Kakira fund’s chief executive, said each of the laboratories cost sh140m.

He urged the beneficiaries to use the facilities sustainably and efficiently.

The fund, he revealed, would also rehabilitate four roads covering 13.3 kilometres in Imanyiro, Mafubira, Wankole and Baitambogwe sub-counties at sh130m.

Migereko commended the fund for accepting to sacrifice part of their ‘hard-earned’ money towards the improvement of education in the community.

He, however, asked the sugarcane farmers to grow more food crops alongside the cash crops.

Migereko, who is also the area MP, (Butembe), donated 10 computers to Busedde College.
