IN a move to prevent fire outbreaks, several schools in and around Kampala have installed fire extinguishers in classrooms and dormitories.

The rampant fire accidents in schools that have destroyed property worth millions of shillings might have been an awakening call to school proprietors to buy extinguishers.

There have been more than 30 fires, the latest being Little Flowers Primary School in Kalisizo, Rakai district.

The Police attribute the fires to negligence by the school authorities, business rivalry, congestion in dormitories and undisciplined students. “Most of these pupils who have been involved in setting dormitories ablaze are juveniles.

We shall see what to do with them. Maybe we shall take them to Kampiringisa for rehabilitation,” says Hajji Moses Balimwoyo, the deputy director of the Police Criminal Investigations Department.

In a survey carried out by The New Vision, in schools around Kawempe Division, most school heads revealed that they have been forced to get fire-fighting machines to guarantee safety for their pupils.

The director of Nabweru Parents School says: “We have made many changes in the school since the inspectors from the education ministry visited us. They told us to change some of our structures, which we hope to do.”

Damulira says most of the pupil’s in the boarding section have been given skills on how to operate the equipment.
