Police officers scampered to safety when the Masaka mayor set three dogs on them to stop them from dispersing a meeting at his home, reports Ali Mambule.

Nkobazambogo, a Buganda youth association, had organised the meeting at John Tibyasa Matovu’s home to discuss the arrest of three senior officials of the kingdom.

Information minister Charles Peter Mayiga, his deputy Medard Lubega Seggona and the Civic Education Committee chairperson Betty Nambooze were arrested on Friday on charges of secterianism, terrorism and inciting violence.

The Police, led by the district CID chief, Christopher Rugumayo, had also sought to arrest the mayor for allowing the youth to convene at his home, which also doubles as the Democratic Party district offices.

“I have not invited you here to provide me with your security. If you don’t leave immediately, you will tussle it out with my dogs,” Tibyasa told Rugumayo.

The youth, who had already been tipped that the Police were on their way to the assembly, quickly concluded their business, but were surrounded as they sang the Buganda anthem.
Rugumayo withdrew with his men without arresting anyone. The youth resolved to demonstrate tomorrow if the officials are not released.
