There are two popular American ladies with the name, Vanessa Williams. One Vanessa Williams (left) made her claim to fame by becoming the first black Miss America but was later stripped of her title for appearing nude in Playboy Magazine.
Despite that set back, she went on to become a successful artiste and actress. The other who inserted an ‘L’ to become Vanessa L. Williams shot to stardom as an actress in the long running television series, Beverly Hills 90210 and Soul Food.
Somewhere down the line, between the organisers – Arkright Projects and Paint the Music, a project that aims to raise money to build the first Museum of Modern Art in East Africa along Arkright City, Entebbe Road got it all wrong. In their press release, they talked of Vanessa Williams, the singer and actress which was enough to spur a flurry of media activity.
However, when Vanessa Williams arrived at Entebbe Airport, the Arkright organising committee, were there to meet her and they all carried placards bearing the picture of Vanessa Williams the actress. Worse still when she was unveiled at the Uganda Golf Club on Saturday night, she was introduced as the singer so naturally there was a scramble for autographs and pictures taken with her but she looked nothing like the two superstar Williams that we know of. In fact our Vanessa Williams was so taken in by the requests for autographs and pictures with her that she must have thought she was a superstar. Okay she was a Vanessa Williams alright, but with no relation to the other two.
The Williams who came to Kampala is the executive director of the national conference of black mayors and businesswomen. She and her delegation of American mayors were here on behalf of Arkright Projects, to meet the business community in Uganda as well as conduct eye clinics in Rakai and Kalangala districts.
