AN apple a day keeps the doctor away. Then, what multiple wonders
would a variety of fruit a day add to ones
health? And when is the right time
to eat fruits?

“Penny Buregeya says: “I love fruits dearly but whenever I eat them after a
meal, my tummy gets too full, feels so heavy and I belch all the way. All I do is rest and I regret why I had to eat the fruits.

On the other hand, when I eat them on an empty stomach it aches throughout,” she says. Grace Nabatya, a nutritionist, says some fruits like pineapples and some types of oranges are acidic and need not be eaten when one is hungry.

However, fruits like bananas, pawpaws, watermelon and several others can be taken on an empty stomach without fear of a stomach ache.

On many occasions, many of us often catch ourselves eating a water pack fruit after lunch. Nabatya says fruits offer catalysts which facilitate and speed up digestion and therefore, it is not right to have meals and fruits at the same time.

When one has a meal, it begins digesting but once it has been eaten with fruit, they will start to ferment which can cause a lot of gas in the stomach. “Avoid eating fruits immediately before or right after a meal,” Nambatya says.

It is healthy to take a glass of fruit juice or fruit salad at least 20 minutes before or after the main meal, This helps one eat less, therefore, avoiding excess weight or being overweight, she says.

It is also better to take a hot drink other than a cold one after a meal so as to assist the digestion process. This is because there will not be gas in the stomach since it has been prepared for the food.
