MODERN computer software applications are vital for business enterprises and organisations in profit maximisation and energy saving, experts have advised.

Latest computer software applications such as Sun Microsystems, Sun Ray Thin Client and VMware Virtualisation, use low cost and low power devices that require no desktop administration unlike Microsoft Windows.

Ketan Girdharlal, the Sun Microsystems architect, observed that Sun Ray clients do not need to be upgraded when new applications are introduced or more computing power is required.
He said Sun Ray Thin Client enables users to access all their critical mission and productivity applications regardless of what hardware or operating system the applications run on.

Anil Kuruvilla, the Computer Point managing director, urged business enterprises and organisations to take advantage of the virtualisation technology, which he said was efficient, reliable and maximises profits.

“Use VMware Virtualisation solutions to reduce IT costs, while increasing the efficiency and utilisation,” Kuruvilla told participants at a clients’ seminar organised by his company at the Kampala Serena Hotel last week.

Kuruvilla pointed out that VMware Virtualisation software lets one computer do the job of multiple computers by sharing the resources of a single computer across multiple environments.

He noted that virtual servers and virtual desktops allow the hosting of multiple operating systems and multiple applications locally and in remote locations, freeing the user from physical and geographical limitations.

He said in addition to energy savings and lower capital expenses, the enterprises are guaranteed better desktop management, increased security, and improved disaster recovery process when they build a virtual infrastructure.

Kuruvilla explained that virtualisation allows the user to have 10 servers on three physical servers and maximise the use of physical servers, which allows new disaster recovery, functions on critical applications.

He said the combination of virtualisation and Thin Client solutions creates a powerful synergy of hardware and deployment of applications. Computer Point, he said, was the only VMware Enterprise partner in Uganda and is the Sun Ray Client specialist.

Joubert Cilliers, the Sun Microsystems accounts sales manager for West Africa, explained that Sun Ray Virtual Display Client delivers an interoperable desktop computing solution that reduces the maintenance, upgrading and operation costs of most desktop environment. Cilliera said Sun Ray enables enterprises save power and maximise profits.

“It’s typical power consumption is only four watts; about 5% of a personal computer,” he explained.
