NURSES this year performed better in the diploma and certificate examinations compared to last year, according to the results that were released yesterday, reports Conan Businge.

The results indicate an improvement, with a 15.3% increase compared to the candidates of May 2007.

Of the 609 candidates, 95.7% passed, whereas last year 80.4% passed.
The failure rate was 4.3% but in May 2007, it was 19.6%.

There were only two diploma candidates compared to four last year and of the students that pursued certificate courses, 61 were registered and 546 enrolled.

The results were released by the higher education state minister, Gabriel Opio, at the ministry headquarters in Kampala.

The secretary of the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examinations Board, Helen Mukakarisa, attributed the improvement to the refresher courses for examiners and tutors on setting questions and conducting practical exams.

On the transport challenges in the schools, Opio said the Government would this financial year buy 13 buses for them.

Out of the 32 nursing schools in Uganda, only 24 provided candidates for this year’s final exams.
