THE much-awaited Haitian-born American music star, Wyclef Jean, arrived yesterday ahead of his single performance at Lugogo Cricket Oval tonight.

The show is part of celebrations to mark telecommunication firm Celtel Uganda’s change of name to Zain, the parent brand used elsewhere in the world.

Formerly Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) in the Middle East and Celtel in Africa, the Zain Group is re-branding globally.

Celtel’s former colours of red and yellow are now changing to Zain’s magenta (pink), aqua green, yellow, black and purple to mark the official change-over to Zain.

Wyclef was flanked by Celtel’s marketing director Caeser Mloka as well Benny D, the disc jockey of Akon, the Senegalese-American singer, and Matthew Mateo, his booking manager.

Wyclef Jean was besieged by journalists and fans at Entebbe Airport.

After leaving the VIP lounge, he momentarily looked at the fans and cameramen running towards him as security tried to restrain them.

Clad in dark glasses, a white T-shirt and blue baggy jeans, he looked laid back unlike other artistes whose arrivals are usually shrouded in mystery or high security detail.

Jean is popular here for such songs as Guantanamela, Hips Don’t Lie (with Shakira), My Love is Your Love (with Whitney Houston) and Sweetest Girl (with Akon, Lil Wayne and Nia).

“I bring greetings from my country to Uganda. I have heard about Uganda for a long time and I know you have gone through struggles just like my native country, Haiti. People in Uganda are very strong,” Jean said.

Asked about what to expect from the show, he said he started singing when he was five years old and that Ugandans should expect the best.

Benny D, who registered a huge fan-base here after his disc-spinning skills at Akon’s show, said the Jean’s do would be bigger.

Jean, who travelled in a Range Rover car similar to the one Akon used, held a child as other frenzied fans sought to take pictures with him.
