THERE was chaos and controversy as the Democratic Party (DP) members held elections to fill the post of secretary general. In the polls, held on Friday, Bukoto South MP Mathias Nsubuga beat Dr. Michael Lulume Bayiga (Buikwe), the acting secretary general, by three votes, 32 to 29.

The post, initially held by Prof. Richard Ebil Otto, fell vacant after he went to live in the USA.

The DP National Council meeting, which sat at Marvin hotel in Natete, attracted over 70 delegates from across the country. The stormy and heated meeting began early in the morning, ending close to 6:00pm. It was chaired by the DP president John Ssebaana Kizito.

The election turned rowdy when a section of delegates walked out in protest, describing the process as “tribalistic.” Abwori Kobwembe, the Kyenjojo DP chairman, said: “This is an acceptable! We can’t allow this to happen. Let them vote in my absence. How can all key posts of a national party go to one tribe?”
