THE Alur kingdom opened its first parliament session since it was recognised by the Government in 2006 at Jukia hill, 2km outside Nebbi town over the weekend.

Speaking at the ceremony, the King, Philip Olarker Rauni III, vowed to strengthen the Alur culture to create peace, unity and harmony for development.

“Alur culture is rich in various aspects. I appeal to you to work together with the central government, district local government, non-governmental organisations and the private sector to develop our beautiful land,”

He urged the chiefs to resolve land disputes and promote the process of transformation in the areas of agriculture, fish farming and animal husbandry to create household incomes.

Rauni stressed the need for sensitisation of the local communities, the importance of food security, environmental protection, proper sanitation and hygiene for good health.

“I urge you to push hard for moral education of the youth in the kingdom because there is total decay of our culture among the young generation,” he lamented.

He commended the Government for recognising the kingdom, which he said had brought unity and peace amongst the people in the area.
