Some people are cringing as they read this. Some have even stopped eating goat’s meat and business at mchomo joints is going down because people fear they could be eating dog’s meat.

The magnitude of dogmeat trade in Uganda is unknown, but the revelation that it could be big business should not be underestimated. In countries such as Korea, China and Philippines, dog meat is a big business.

But the question we need to ask is: Is dog meat bad? Does dog meat have any nutritional value? Dr. George Nasinyama, a veterinary doctor and a meat specialist at Makerere University, says dog meat is just like any other meat.

“Meat is meat, it has the same protein value like goat meat or beef.” He adds that the only difference is in their smell. Nasinyama says dog meat is of great importance in China and Korea, where it is used as a medicine.

Between two and four million dogs are estimated to be consumed in South Korea every year, an AFP story says. “It is interesting that in Korea, they are now looking for ways of classifying dogs as livestock.

This this means that their meat will be used just like beef,” Nasinyama says. “The Chinese say dog meat can increase a man’s virility. That is why it is not a common dish in China, it is only eaten on special occasion,” says Nasinyama.

Another advantage dog meat has is it gives the body more heat. Dr. Nasinyama says the Eskimos eat the meat during winter to generate heat in their bodies. However, Nasinyama warns that not every dog can be eaten.

Nasinyama says some types of dogs are specifically bred for meat while others are reared as pets. He also adds that like any other meat, there is a danger to your health if the meat is not tested for diseases or is not properly cooked.

Nasinyama says the danger with dog meat may be in the way it is slaughtered, adding that dog meat is not poisonous. Despite its nutritional value, many people cannot imagine taking a bite of dog meat.

“It would be offensive if I walked into a restaurant and found dog meat on the menu,” says Aaron Egesa. He says the mere mention of dog meat makes him cringe, adding that he does not understand how one can eat such meat.

However, Nasinyama says: “I think it is the mind set we have. To many of us a dog is a pet and we do not want to think of it as meat.” Rose Nabirye of Naalya has stopped buying goat meat since learning that people could be eating dog meat.

“It is disgusting to think that one can eat the meat, my personal friend,” says Nabirye who rears a dog.
