I AM a carefree person and do not mind shopping off the streets or from the secondhand markets. I am not into suits, neckties and such stuff unless I am going to a wedding,” says Masta Robbo, formerly Rasta Rob MC. Robbo is now the presenter of the Supersonic Show on Super FM but is more famous for being one of the first radio DJs in town.

He was also a famous DJ at Angenoir Discotheque and a musician. However, he went for kyeeyo in the UK and only returned a few months ago. Here, he sports a black baseball shirt, blue jeans, Puma sneakers and a skull cap which he bought from High Street in London for £500 (sh1.7m).

However, depending on your personality and taste, you can get the same look by shopping in Kampala for much less. One thing is for sure: Masta Robbo’s clothes are quite Old Skool (a street style popularised by 1990s Hip-hop outfits like Coolio, Black Street and Naughty By Nature.) People who love Old Skool still wear these clothes.

But there is a similar, yet more trendy line of clothes which one can wear in a sports-street style. Such ‘New School’ outfits are available in town and for much lower prices than Robbo spent on his.

The new school jeans, which are often straight from waist to ankle but in the same sky blue colour as Robbo’s, cost between sh40,000 and sh60,000.

They are available at Kagame’s boutique on Sunset Arcade. Trendy baseball shirts with an EKO logo cost between sh120,000 and sh150,000 at the same boutique.

Instead of just a plain skull cap, one who is in with the trends can go for a durag, a cap that has two tails that fasten at the back of the head. The price of a durag ranges from sh15,00 to sh25,000 at Kagame’s Boutique.

And if you do not want to go for the old style Puma sneakers, then you can go for the genuine K-swiss sneakers at sh80,000 to sh120,000 from the same boutique.

You can also get such outfits from outlets at Pioneer Mall, Sylvie’s Boutique at Garden City or from shops at Cham Towers. For sh355,000 you can walk out in a trendy sports-street style outfit. However, Robbo’s genuine Armani shades are quite exclusive.

They cannot be found in Kampala but counterfeits go for up to sh100,000. If you are fixated on the old school style and want to look exactly like Masta Robbo, head to the streets and secondhand markets.

In St. Balikudembe Market and Nakivubo Parkyard, you will get such outfits for sh50,000, or less if you are good at bargaining. You can also get these outfits from the traders at Nakivubo Mews.

New York baseball T-shirts cost sh10, 000; jeans cost between sh7,000 and sh15,000; while sneakers go for sh25,000.

Skull caps costs sh2,000 to sh5,000 while copies of Ray-Ban label designer sunglasses can be bought for as low as sh4,000.
