Etiquette for men

Not many men wear vests in Uganda, but a vest is a type of inner garment used mostly by the males to protect their outer clothing from absorbing excess sweat. The vests are normally made of fine quality cotton materials and are loosely woven. This loosely woven garment provides soothing effect to the body and protection from heavy sweating.

The word vest has different meanings: In Uganda, it is considered as a sleeveless white T-shirt. Builders wear these vests without shirts because they have a soothing effect from the hot sun and enable easy body movement. Vests are designed for easy fit and comfortable wear in all sorts of climates and work environments.

White colour vests are preferred all over the world but due to the latest trend in fashion, various colours are being manufactured to cater for the needs of the teenagers. It is also called banyan in some Asian countries.

In Uganda though, many people may not necessarily wear a vest but will wear a T-shirt as a substitute for the vest. While there is nothing wrong with this, one has to bear in mind a number of things. The vest has to be tight fitting so that it gives your shirt a natural appearance. On top of that, you have to make sure the sleeves of your T-shirt are shorter than the sleeves of the shirt, if you are wearing a short sleeved shirt. And if your T-shirt is branded, make sure the words on that T-shirt are not visible through your shirt.
