Police intensifies community policing

THE Police have intensified communituy policing and crime prevention programmes in western Uganda. Martin Amoru, the regional police commander, said the programmes were aimed at reducing crime, especially murder in the region.

THE Police have intensified communituy policing and crime prevention programmes in western Uganda. Martin Amoru, the regional police commander, said the programmes were aimed at reducing crime, especially murder in the region.
“We have a community outreach programme as a major form of policing. We offer solutions where we can,†Amoru said.
He added that the project was designed after several cases of mob justice and murder were being reported in the region almost on a daily basis.
Amoru noted that last week alone, over five murder cases were reported in Kibaale district and one recorded in Hoima.
He said murder cases in Kibaale district were many because people fight over petty issues, including proceeds from harvests.
He added that the Police would use all means at its disposal to sensitise the masses, find out problems and offer possible solutions.
Amoru appealed to the public to desist from taking the law into their hands but hand over any suspected criminals to the concerned authorities.
He urged the people in the region to get in touch with the police to find ways of dealing with mob justice.
Last week, Ben Alex, a resident of Kinga village Nalweyo sub-county in Kibaale district, was lynched and his body burnt to ashes for allegedly stealing a mattress. An angry mob also lynched a suspected bicycle thief in Kisiita trading centre in Kibaale district.
In another incident, a body of a 42-year-old man was discovered near Birembo technical institute in the same district.
Karoli Kisembo, a resident of Birembo village in Kasambya sub-county, was reportedly murdered by his brother, who was identified as Polikalipo Sekate.
Sekate’s motive is not yet known.
In a another incident, John Kiiza, a resident of Nyabinanga village in Bwikara sub-county, was discovered dead on a path leading to a village well.
In Kyajawe, Edisa Mpumwire was killed by her husband, George Tulinawe, during a quarrel over sh90,000. The money was from the sale of maize.
The Police said Tulinawe was still on the run.
