A Total of Ksh7m (Ush175m) in prize awards awaits the 14 Kenyan medallists when they arrive home from Beijing where they finished 15th overall in the just concluded Olympic Games.
Kenya won 14 medals — five gold, five silver and four bronze — to make it the largest haul ever since their first participation in the 1956 Melbourne Games.
President Mwai Kibaki, while lauding the team’s performance, said the government will award the winners with cash prizes. Gold medallists will each receive Ksh0.75m (Ush18.8m); silver winners will pocket Ksh0.5m while bronze medallists will get Ksh0.25m (Ush5.2m) each.
Kibaki said the awards were in recognition of the team’s historic performance at the Games that saw the team emerge the top nation in Africa.
It was an historic event for the neighbouring country. For the first time in the Games history, women athletes won gold medals while the country also clinched the men’s marathon gold for the first time.
