KABAKA Ronald Muwenda Mutebi has pledged to support the new bishop of Kasana-Luweero, Paul Ssemogerere, to develop the diocese.
His message was contained in a speech read by the deputy Katikkiro, Emmanuel Ssendawula, at the bishop’s consecration ceremony on Saturday.

Mutebi said Luweero is a historic area that was devastated by war.

He pledged to support the programmes aimed at developing the area.

Katikkiro J.B. Walusimbi said Ssemogerere had been appointed at the right time when Buganda needed leaders of his calibre to unite the people. “At this time, we in Buganda need unity in order to succeed in what we do.”

Hundreds of Christians and well-wishers converged at the Cathedral in Kasana to witness the consecration and installation of Msgr. Ssemogerere as the second bishop of the 12-year-old diocese.

The function was presided over by the Archbishop of Kampala, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

He was assisted by Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala and the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam.

Ssemogerere is the former parish priest of Christ The King Church in Kampala and Vicar General of Kampala Archdiocese. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop in June.

In his maiden speech, Ssemogerere urged Christians not to desert him. “The challenges should not be left to me alone, but shared.”

He said he would seek guidance from Cardinal Wamala, and his predecessor, Bishop Lwanga,to enhance the development of the diocese.

Ssemogerere received two cars, including one from President Museveni.
