THE Ministry of Health has earmarked sh1.8b this financial year to renovate the dilapidated structures of Gulu regional referral hospital.

The money provided under the Capital Development Fund will be used to revamp drug stores, wards, staff houses as well as building a new mortuary.

The hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Yovantino Agel Akii, yesterday revealed the offer to The New Vision.

He noted that most of the structures constructed in 1934 were in a sorry state, which put the lives of patients and staff at risk.

“And due to lack of accommodation for our medical workers, only 30% of them live in the quarters and 70% rent far away, which makes it difficult for them to respond to emergencies,” Akii explained.

He said part of the sh1.8b had been released to the hospital, adding that it would also be used to equip the Ear, Nose and Throat Unit.

The hospital, noted the medical chief, did not have specialised and consultant doctors. He said they were expecting the ministry to post a number of doctors to Gulu to fill the vacuum.

Akii also revealed that the Italian Cooperation in partnership with the ministry, had also set up and equipped a new X-ray unit.

“For a long time, this hospital has had no X-ray and ultra-sound machines but now the Government has given us new machines, which we are already using,” he said, adding that they had also received an ambulance from the ministry.

“We now need to strengthen our team work spirit. We also need cooperation from the stakeholders, including the district leadership,” Akii couselled.

He thanked the ministry for the offer and asked them to respond to the hospital’s needs as they arise.
